Identify
Olav van Lede explores the idea of how people use clothing and merchandise to express their identities—whether political, fashionable, or ideological. These choices are often made with great care. His series of painted ceramic hats reflects this theme of identification and belonging to a group. For some, it creates a sense of unity; for others, it highlights division and polarization.

Olav van Lede
The phrase “leaving the past behind” is often heard, but artist Olav van Lede questions whether that’s always necessary. He sees the past as a treasure trove of unique moments, rich with lessons, nostalgia, and inspiration for renewal. In his work, Olav brings historical documents and themes vividly to life, often using iconic images and objects. His art explores a wide range of topics, from space exploration and war to strategy, gastronomy, and memory.
Olav’s creative process begins far from his studio, hunting for historical documents at collectors, antique dealers, and museums. Through his art, he sheds new light on both joyful and darker moments of history.
Born on June 28, 1976, in Montreal, Canada, Olav lived in Belgium, England, and France before settling in Amsterdam in the early 2000s. There, he moved into an old studio in the Oud-Zuid district. After a time in the design world, he returned to his true passion in 2021, enrolling at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy to deepen his practice. His work has been shown in various galleries and at fairs such as ART The Hague, Art Laren, and the NockNock Art Fair.
