The Button chair
Two solid oak “buttons” are connected by oversized carbon fiber threads, forming the seat and backrest.Handcrafted and impregnated with epoxy, the thread defines the chair’s exceptional construction—merging traditional craftsmanship with progressive design. Tjimkje de Boer
Tjimkje de Boer is an artist and designer. She graduated from Art Academy Minerva in 2007 and now fully dedicates herself to both creating art and designing. Inspiration often stems from everyday moments, captured during her travels through photography — her most important tool to preserve fleeting impressions. These images act as visual “notes to self”, often appearing insignificant at first, but later becoming the spark for new ideas.
By gently tilting reality or shifting context, Tjimkje transforms the familiar into something unexpected: Asian mountain tops evolve into monumental lighting objects, buttons turn into chairs, and classic paintings inspire picturesque mirrors. This playful, thoughtful twist on the ordinary is a defining feature of her work.
In her art, Tjimkje also revives ancient crafts, such as woven wood techniques, bringing them into the present with a fresh, contemporary spirit.
