Roots
In Roots, artist Tjimkje de Boer weaves together the present and the past. The ancient art of braiding, rooted in cultures around the world, has been passed down from generation to generation. More than just a functional technique, braiding symbolizes the bond between generations and communities — a bond that now seems increasingly under pressure. Like an interwoven structure, society gains strength through connection and layering: the whole is stronger than the individual parts. In Roots, Tjimkje de Boer breathes new life into this age-old craft. The sense of interconnectedness is literally placed under tension and brought to a standstill in our modern times.
Tjimkje de Boer
Tjimkje de Boer is an artist and designer. She graduated from Art Academy Minerva in 2007 and now fully dedicates herself to both creating art and designing. Inspiration often stems from everyday moments, captured during her travels through photography — her most important tool to preserve fleeting impressions. These images act as visual “notes to self”, often appearing insignificant at first, but later becoming the spark for new ideas.
By gently tilting reality or shifting context, Tjimkje transforms the familiar into something unexpected: Asian mountain tops evolve into monumental lighting objects, buttons turn into chairs, and classic paintings inspire picturesque mirrors. This playful, thoughtful twist on the ordinary is a defining feature of her work.
In her art, Tjimkje also revives ancient crafts, such as woven wood techniques, bringing them into the present with a fresh, contemporary spirit.
